From Hue to Hoi An : Authentic Villages - 4 Days
Day 1: Hue - Imperial City - Thuy Bieu - Hue
You will start the day with the discovery of the Imperial City, listed Unesco World Heritage. Hue was the ancient capital of Vietnam, under the reign of the Nguyen dynasty, from 1802 to 1945. The city is considered a big living museum with many historical monuments, imperial tombs, pagodas and temples that tell us the history of the last feudal dynasty in Vietnam.
Road to the grapefruits village of Thuy Bieu, between the city center and Nguyen emperors tombs. The ancient village is specialized in the plantation of grapefruits, famous for their quality. In the past, they were given to the royal family. Cradle of culture of Hue, Thuy Bieu is an old village currently developing eco-tourism. Ride by bike, some stops are prevised: to the old temple dedicated to the genius of the village, at school, and in a family which owns three of the older houses. These buildings are characterized by engravings and sculptures in wood: dragons, phoenix and other natural landscapes on columns, beams or rafters.
Return by bike to the family house. Participate in the preparation of the lunch with the family: figs salad, lemongrass duck…. Go back by car to the center of Hue. Go to the local’s house. Welcoming by the family. Diner and night at the local’s house.
Day 2: Hue - Vinh Moc - Phuoc Tich - Hue
Visit the remains of American war of the former demilitarized zone (DMZ). Tunnels provide exceptional infrastructure including dozens of undergrounds, dug around 18m in depth. Vinh Moc was the first locality to suffer the war in terms of aerial destruction against the North in June 1965. The village of Vinh Moc was almost entirely destructed, locals had to dig tunnels to ensure 84 families' survival with 300 persons to maintain the production and the battle. Some of undergrounds stayed well-conserved until today.
Road to the village of Phuoc Tich. Lunch at the village of Phuoc Tich which spreads in a poetic sweetness along the river of O Lau, almost 40km from the city of Hue. Like in other Vietnamese villages, Phuoc Tich lives mainly of agriculture. A peaceful place, away from the time, where houses with tiled roofs are surrounded by tea plants well cut. Even if it has 500 years of existence, the village of Phuoc Tich started to be known in 2003, after the work of research of the architect Hoang Dao Kinh. Go back to Hue at the end of the day.
Day 3: Hue - Hoi An - Van Lang - Hoi An
Let’s go to the fishing village of Van Lang! Discover these places that make the charm of Vietnam: local market Ba Le, rice fields, traditional cemeteries, schools… Arrived in the village, you will be warmly welcomed by Mr. Han, from a family of three generations. He will offer you a green tea tasting.
After that, you will take a cruise on board of a « thung chai », a round basket boat made of bamboo, much more stable than you think, and the fishermen will teach you the traditional fishing. Guaranteed fun ! Back to Mr. Han’s house, take advantage of a relaxation time thanks to a foot massage with medicinal herbs, a traditional therapy practice, very enjoyable.
Your feet will be in a tepid bath with lemongrass and leafs of lemon tree, that will delight your sense of smell.
Then you will prepare the lunch with the Han Family. On the menu : crunchy pancakes, nems from Hoi An, tam huu, grilled fish in a leaf of banana tree… It’s delicious !
And finally, to finish this beautiful day, you will have the chance to chill in the shade of a coconut tree, before going back to Hoi An.
Day 4: Hoi An - Gò Noi - Hoi An
Early in the morning, you will leave the beautiful and touristic Hoi An to reach (15 km) a real typical Vietnamese village, still untouched by the influx of tourists, living almost exclusively with land products. You will go by bike, discovering the rural life, in the countryside of Central Vietnam, charming and authentic, far from the crowed cities.
Once arrived, you will discover the family, who will warmly welcome you with a glass of green tea, before the tour departure. This village lives almost 6 months a year of the red chilies culture. You will see by bike these little chilies in front of numerous families’ houses, under the sun, sweet-smelling like pepper. If the chilies are cultivated half of the year, other vegetables, fruits and herbs occupy the farmers the rest of the year, like sesame, corn, beans, pumpkins, and peanuts.
You will participate in diverse culture activities, like harvest, the land preparation with buffalos, or the sowing, and learn more about the land products. A real moment of sharing with villagers (see the text box on page 10 to know about land culture and activities). On the way, you will stop at a weaving, and an oil factory, then a stop in a school or a nursery, and have the occasion to offer the children notebooks, pencils or sweets.
To end this tour, you will have the chance to do a canoe trip on the Cao Tau river, a peaceful and quiet place. An ecological activity, furthermore you will admire wonderful landscapes, with free-range buffalos. On the return to the house, you will stop in a factory to buy noodles for your lunch. You will learn how to cook the famous “My Quang”, typical noodles soup of this region. You can help family’s members, like crushing and roasting fresh peanuts to accompany this plate.
