Laos Discovery

This trip gives you an overview of Laos and its most mythical places.

  • DAY 1. ARRIVAL IN VIENTIANE (B, D)

  •  
    Upon arrival at the airport, you will be welcomed by your Anglophone guide and driven to the city.
    Lunch at a local restaurant.
    After your meal, your guided visit of the city will begin. The first place you will explore is Vat Sisaket, one of Vientiane’s most beautiful and important temples. You will make a stop in front of the Patouxay, the local Victory Gate. It is a war monument in the centre of Vientiane which was built between 1957 and 1968.
    After that, you will visit Pha That Luang, a gold covered large Buddhist stupa which is generally regarded as the most important national monument in Laos and a national symbol. 
    At the end of the day, you will take a walk along the Mekong River to admire the sun setting on the horizon.
    Dinner at a Kua Lao restaurant with traditional Lao musical ambiance. 
    Overnight stay at the hotel. 
  • DAY 2. VIENTIANE – VANG VIENG (B, L, D)

  • After breakfast, you will depart for the colorful Thong Khan Kham Market. There are a plethora of markets in Vientiane and this is where you will find all kind of products, from food to electronics. 
    Departure for Vang Vieng. You will drive through a beautiful mountainous region full of caves hidden in limestone cliffs and waterfalls, but also the Mekong plain
    You will make a stop to visit the archeologic site of Vang Xang, where dozen of Buddha figures are carved into the rock and are said to be dating from the 11th century. This site was probably an ancient elephant graveyard, explaining why it is called Vangsang, “the Elephant Court”. 
    Visit of a local market where numerous Hmong people as well as other local minorities come to buy and sell their products.
    Lunch at a local restaurant. 
    Arrival in Vang Vieng, a small city located 160 kilometer away from Vientiane. It is known for its beauty: a mountainous relief punctuated by numerous caves carved into limestone cliffs and waterfalls. These caves are said to have been used as a shelter by the region’s inhabitants during the different country’s invasions. 
    Visit of the Tham Chang Cave, one of the only ones to be illuminated in Vang Vieng. Before reaching this place, you will have to climb 147 steps. However, your effort won’t be in vain as you will have the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful panoramic view on the valley once you have arrived at the top. Many caves are said to have been used to protect the region’s inhabitants during the invasions, but today, they are used for worshipping spirits. 
    You will embark little boat to cruise on the Nam Song River and admire the gorgeous surrounding landscapes.
    Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
  • DAY 3. VANG VIENG – LUANG PRABANG (B, L, D)

    Breakfast before your departure for Luang Prabang. You will drive through the countryside and be able to admire spectacular mountainous landscapes as well as numerous villages located on highlands. Once you have reached Phoukhoun, you will cross a great number of villages housing Hmong people living in wooden houses. You will make a stop at Phoukhoun for a walk in its beautiful market. 
    Lunch at a local restaurant.
    After your meal, you will be back on the road to go to Luang Prabang. A stop in a village housing a tribe living on the hill is planned. The village of Muang Xieng will be your next stop and you will spend a moment observing the local life before arriving in Luang Prabang.
    Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight stay in Luang Prabang. 
     
  • DAY 4. LUANG PRABANG – PAK OU (B, L, D)

  • After your breakfast, you will visit the National Museum, installed in the Ancient Royal Palace. It houses the Phra Bang, a 83cm high statue covered in gold leaf and the mystical national emblem of the country, numerous statuettes discovered in the region as well as a plethora of jewelries formerly owned by the royal family.
    Once you are done with your visit, you will embark on a traditional boat to cruise on the Mekong River. During the cruise, you will make a stop in a village to learn about its inhabitants’ daily life on the riverbanks. 
    Arrival at the sacred caves of Pak Ou, two grottoes excavated at the foot of a cliff in which thousands of Buddha statues (more than 8,000) are housed. 
    Lunch at a local restaurant located near thecaves.
    Return to Luang Prabang by boat. You will make a stop at Vat Long Khoun in Xieng Mene, located on the other side of the Mekong River. In the past, kings used to come stay there for a few days before being crowned. At the top of the hill overhanging the Vat Long Khoun, you will discover the Vat Chom Phet that was built in 1888 and allows its visitors to admire the city and its river from above.
    Arrival in Luang Prabang and walk in the night market.

  • DAY 5. LUANG PRABANG – KUANG SI (B, L, D)

  • Breakfast at the hotel and first discovery of the ancient royal capital where a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere reigns. 
    Visit of the Wat Mai Temple, one of Luang Prabang’s largest and most beautiful temples. Its central position (in front of the night market and beside the Royal Palace) makes it one of the most visited temples of this ancient royal town. This Wat was built by King Anourout at the end of the 18th century and was enlarged in the 19th century. After the Chinese had destroyed the town in the last half of the XIXth century, it served as a temple for the royal family, and also sheltered for a long time the Phra Bang, which is a mystical emblem in this country.
    Visit of the Wat Xieng Thong or "monastery of the golden city". It is the religious emblem of Luang Prabang and one of the highest symbols of Buddhism in Laos which was the reason why it was spared from the plunder of 1887.
    Ascent on the Phou Si Hill, which dominates the city. After you have climbed the 328 steps that lead to the Wat Chom Si Temple, you will be able to admire the splendor of the city and its surrounding mountains.
    Lunch at a local restaurant.
    Departure for an excursion at the Kuang Si Waterfalls, 25 kilometers away from Luang Prabang. You will make a stop on your way to visit the Hmong village of Ban Na Ouane and the Khmou village of Ban Tha Pen, known under the name of Lao Theung, and located near the falls. 
    After that, you will continue toward Kuang Si and discover little falls, basins, a watermill… You will also have the opportunity take a swim in the clear water of the fall.
    Return to Luang Prabang. Stop at Ban Xan Khong, a village specialized in the production of paper.
    Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight stay at the hotel.
  • DAY 6. LUANG PRABANG (B)

  • Early in the morning, you will be able to assist to the Alms Giving Ceremony: as the sun rises in Luang Prabang around 200 Buddhist monks depart from their various temples to gather their daily meal. The tradition of alms gathering dates back to the 14th century, yet still today locals wake early to prepare the food for the monks and wait quietly by the roadside to give their gifts. 
    Return to the hotel for your breakfast.
    Day free at leisure until your transfer to the airport for your international flight.
