The Essentials of Laos

From Luang Prabang to Vientiane, through Vang Vieng, this tour will inspire you!

  • DAY 1. LUANG PRABANG

  • Upon arrival at the airport, you will be welcomed by your Anglophone guide and the driver will take you to your hotel (the room will be available at 2pm).
    Meals at your expense. Overnight stay at the hotel.
  • DAY 2. LUANG PRABANG (B, L)

  • You will discover the Vat Xieng Thong temple, the City of Gold’s monastery, which ornaments, mosaics and stupas are the most refined. This monastery houses a majestic statue of a lying Buddha.
    After that, you will visit the city’s oldest temple, Vat Visoun, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century. It was partially destroyed during a fire in 1887 and the architects redesigned it with style inspired by Vat Phou, a Khmer temple. 
    Lunch in town. 
    After your meal, you will visit the Vat Xieng Mouane Temple. In the afternoon, you will discover the history of the region and of the royal family at the Royal Palace, which was converted into a museum (warning: the museum is closed every Tuesdays). 
    You will visit the National Museum where the famous Pha Ban, a golden Buddha statue, is exposed. 
    At the end of the day, you will take a walk in the local market with the guide.

  • DAY 3. LUANG PRABANG – PAK OU (B, L)

  • Early in the morning, if you want, you will be able to assist to the Alms Giving Ceremony: as the sun rises in Luang Prabang around 200 Buddhist monks depart from their various temples to gather their daily meal. The tradition of alms gathering dates back to the 14th century, yet still today locals wake early to prepare the food for the monks and wait quietly by the roadside to give their gifts. 
    After that, you will depart for Ban Don Ngum, a village located 1,5 hour away from Luang Prabang. After you visit of the village, you will go on a cruise on the picturesque Nam Ou River. You will then have the opportunity to discover superb karstic landscapes and remote villages, only accessible by boat.  
    You will make a stop on the way to eat your picnic before continuing to visit the Pak Ou Caves, known for their miniature Buddha sculptures.
    Visit of a rice wine distillery on your way back to Luang Prabang.
  • DAY 4. LUANG PRABANG – KUANG SI FALLS (B, L)

    Departure for Kuang Si, 30-minute away from Luang Prabang. The waterfalls are not very high, but they are known to be breathtaking. The whole site became a national park for biodiversity protection. 
    You will make a stop on your way to visit the Talat Phosy Market and several ethnic villages: the Hmong village of Ban Na Oune, the Khamu village of Ban Tha Pane as well as the Lao Loum village of Ban Na Ouan. 
    After that, you will have the opportunity to take a swim in the natural basins of Kuang Si or to take a walk in the surrounding areas.
    Lunch at a restaurant.
    Return to Luang Prabang. Ascent of Mount Phousi: you will climb 328 steps up to reach the temple located on its peak and that will offer a breathtaking view on the Mekong, the Nam Khan River and the royal city. 
    Walk in the night market where the ethnicities living in the mountains sell their products: handcrafted objects, embroideries, silk fabrics etc.

  • DAY 5. LUANG PRABANG – VANG VIENG (B, L)

  • Road to Vang Vieng: you will spend seven hours traveling on Asia’s most picturesque, wild and mysterious roads. 
    You will arrive in Vang Vieng around noon. It is a little town located in a bend of the Nam Song River, dominated by an imposing limestone massif pierced by caves and covered by jungles and bushes on its heights. 
    Visit of Tham Chang, the region’s most famous cave. After that, you will hike to the Deang Tai and Souay villages, where ethnicities live.
    Dinner at your expense. Overnight stay at the hotel.
  • DAY 6. VANG VIENG – VIENTIANE (B, L)

    Departure for Vientiane (3-hour drive). Vientiane, also known as the City of the Moon, is the capital and largest city of Laos, on the banks of the Mekong River. Old colonial villas, large shaded avenues and small houses give to the capital a peaceful atmosphere. 
    Lunch in town.
    The afternoon will be dedicated to the visit of the most outstanding monuments of the Lao capital: the Wat Si Saket Temple, built in 1818 and famous for its thousand Buddha statues; the Wat Ho Phra Keo Museum, built on the model of an ancient temple and housing different sacred Khmer and Lao pieces of art; the Wat That Luang Temple, the most important Buddhist monument in Laos.
    Dinner at your expense. Overnight stay at the hotel.
  • DAY 7. VIENTIANE – DEPARTURE (B)

  • Day free at leisure until your transfer to the airport for your international flight.
